Crafter's Growler Brewery

Crafters Growler is a craft beer brand built around the idea that beer should have as much personality as the people who drink it. Rather than relying on familiar craft beer aesthetics, the identity uses bold storytelling, expressive typography, and distinctive illustration to create a brand that's confident, memorable, and unmistakably its own.

PROJECT INFO

The Challenge

The craft beer category is saturated with visual clichés, from vintage badges and handwritten scripts to generic illustrations that make brands difficult to distinguish from one another.

The challenge was to create an identity that celebrated the character of craft brewing while giving the brand a bold personality capable of standing out on the shelf and building an emotional connection beyond the product itself.

My Contribution

I developed the brand identity and visual system, defining the creative direction, typography, illustration style, packaging language, and supporting brand assets.

The objective wasn't simply to design a beer label, but to create a distinctive brand personality that could extend consistently across packaging, merchandise, promotional materials, and future product ranges.

Design Thinking

Rather than designing around the product itself, I focused on creating a brand with a distinct personality. Every visual decision was made to reinforce the idea that craft beer is expressive, bold, and full of character—not just another beverage on the shelf.

Three principles guided the identity:

Personality — Develop a visual language that feels confident, playful, and memorable through expressive typography, bold illustration, and conversational messaging.

Recognition — Develop distinctive visual assets that are immediately associated with the brand. The custom wordmark subtly references the silhouette of a beer glass, strengthening category recognition while remaining unique to the identity.

Scalability — Build a flexible identity system that could extend across different beer varieties, merchandise, and future brand applications without losing its core character.

Bringing the Brand to Life

The identity was translated into a cohesive brand system through packaging, label design, typography, illustration, and brand messaging. Rather than treating these as individual assets, each touchpoint reinforced the same personality and storytelling.

The roaring lion illustration became the brand's visual anchor, while bold typography and handcrafted textures reflected the authenticity of craft brewing. Humorous copy, including "It's not a burp, it's a growl," introduced a memorable tone of voice that differentiated the brand beyond its visual identity.

Together, these elements created a recognisable system capable of adapting across growlers, bottle labels, merchandise, promotional materials, and future product lines while maintaining a consistent and engaging brand experience.

Key Takeaway

People rarely build loyalty to products—they build loyalty to personalities. This project reinforced that a strong brand isn't remembered because of what it sells, but because of how distinctly it expresses itself.
